Research Assistant

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for one year at HEW Level 6 and requires the successful applicant to coordinate and conduct three phases of research required under a contract with the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing. The appointee will be responsible for planning the research for each phase, conducting literature searches, data analysis and writing reports and manuscripts. In conducting the research the appointee will liaise closely with the statisticians, senior research fellows and Director of the ALSWH.

Research Fellow (Environmental Health)

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years at Academic Research Level B and requires the successful applicant to assist in the development of new environmental health research programmes in the School, and will have responsibility for the day-to-day running of these. The studies form part of the strategic portfolio of the School’s newly appointed Professor of Public and Environmental Health, Prof. Philip Weinstein. The main aim of the research will be to improve our understanding of the relationship between ecosystem health and human health, and will include work on the health effects of water quality, air quality, and vector borne disease. The work will in many cases be interdisciplinary, drawing on expertise within the School as well as on collaborations with other Schools, Faculties, and organisations. The role is an exciting one that allows for considerable creativity as well as reliable publication opportunities.

Research Officer

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment until 30 June 2011 at Academic Level A and requires the successful applicant to work with a multidisciplinary team of investigators and contribute to the research program comprising the evaluation. Job duties include the day to day management of a large–scale cohort study of people with chronic disease including maintaining the participant database, co-ordinating the participant retention strategy, monitoring and providing advice on study timelines, liaising with internal and external stakeholders and contractors, collecting and managing data, and performing descriptive data analysis. You will also need to be able to write reports and contribute to academic publications. From time to time you may be expected to provide general research assistance for other qualitative and quantitative research studies as part of the evaluation.

Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor

This is a full/part-time, fixed term appointment for 3 years at Academic Level C or D and requires the successful applicant to provide academic leadership in social sciences as related to population health and medical education. The successful applicant will contribute to the development and delivery of an innovative multidisciplinary teaching program for medical students and other undergraduate and postgraduate students. The successful applicant will be a key member of the Population Health teaching team, which is responsible for the delivery of population health teaching into the medical program at The University of Queensland, and will lead the social sciences component of that teaching. The successful applicant will also work with the Head of School of Population Health, the Head of the Health Systems & Economics Academic Discipline Group and other members of the School of Population Health to build and maintain vibrant research and teaching programs around the social aspects of health and medical practice within health systems and population health frameworks.

Principal Research Fellow

This is a part-time (0.4 FTE), fixed term appointment for 1 year at Academic Level D and requires the successful applicant to provide academic and research leadership to two major projects in the School of Population Health. With regard to the ACE-Prevention study, the successful applicant will systematically report on the project findings and to disseminate these research findings appropriately to different stakeholders, including government and non-governmental health policy makers, researchers and health professionals. The incumbent will be part of a research team consisting of 15–20 research fellows, research assistants and PhD students at UQ and Deakin University. The principal investigators will provide guidance and supervision. As Director of QEG, the successful applicant will oversee independent evaluations of the submissions made by pharmaceutical companies to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC). The Director will oversee QEG to provide evaluations of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of pharmaceutical products being considered by the PBAC for listing on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Schedule. The successful applicant would liaise with personnel with expertise in clinical epidemiology, health economics and biostatistics to assist them in the preparation and review of the evaluations. The successful applicant will also participate in other research activities with the Group, such as projects in pharmacoepidemiology.

Clinical Trial Coordinator

Lecturer / Senior Lecturer (Biostatistics)

This is a fixed term appointment to 31 December 2012 at academic level B or C and requires the successful applicant to contribute to the development, organisation and delivery of courses in biostatistics. This role will require you to supervise and co-supervise Master Dissertations and Research Higher Degrees students. Additionally, in this role you will be required to develop a research program, either in an area of biostatistics related to the School’s major research themes, collaboratively with multidisciplinary research teams within the School, or in collaboration with staff in local hospitals.

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years at Academic Level A and requires the successful applicant to contribute to the work on updating the Global Burden of Disease study undertaken at the University of Queensland. The Gates Foundation is funding this three year study as a collaborative effort between the University of Washington, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, the World Health Organization and the University of Queensland. The goal of the project is to produce new, robust and reliable estimates of burden for all major diseases, injuries and risks that are widely disseminated, understood and easily used by policymakers, researchers, funders and practitioners.
